Episode 1 - The Beauty of the Grand Canal
The Beauty of the Grand Canal: Together with two foreign narrators, we are here to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Grand Canal, and experience its ages-old culture.
In this program, Tom and Chantel acted as the narrators. They took the audience to explore the canal culture with a long history. Chantel from South Africa sat in a tourist boat appreciating the canal scenery, walked on the ancient streets along the canal to experience the hustle and bustle of the traditional lifestyle, and listened to the folk painter Wu Liren telling stories of the Canal through his vivid paintings. To learn about the Canal's history, Tom from the UK visited Zhu Bingren, one of the three initiators for the application of the Grand Canal as a World Heritage. He also visited the museums along the Canal, and appreciated the charm of Hangzhou's important intangible cultural heritages, such as Wang Xingji's fans, Zhang Xiaoquan's scissors, and West Lake silk umbrellas. Time flows with the water in the Canal. Now they found that the ancient canal is taking on a whole new look to welcome visitors from all over the world.
Episode 2, (6:51) - Romances of Love at the West Lake
The Romances of Love at the West Lake: Two foreigners came to Hangzhou and fell in love with their other half by the West Lake tell their romantic stories in the “Picturesque Jiangnan”. The Romances of Love at the West Lake: Naty and Nicolas, who found their "exotic love" by the side of the picturesque West Lake, narrate the love stories of the lake. In this program, they stood by the West Lake, wearing different Chinese traditional costumes— Tang suit, Song suit, and cheongsam, and told the three romantic stories familiar to all— The Legend of the White Snake, The Butterfly Lovers, A Plum Wife and Crane Sons. Meanwhile, against the background of the hand- painted ink paintings by a team at China Academy of Art, a number of young artists used Beijing Opera, Yue Opera, Song and Dance Drama and other art forms to vividly present these stories. The scenery of the West Lake in the program is wonderfully blended with ink painting, drama and other art forms. The charm of the elegant West Lake and the Chinese-style romance is fully displayed in the narration by the foreigners.
Episode 3 (14:56) - The Light of Civilization at Liangzhu
The Light of Civilization at Liangzhu: Two foreign friends from other ancient civilizations of the world paid visits to the Archaeological Ruins of Liangzhu City, to explore the wonders of China's 5,000-year civilization. The two narrators of The Light of Civilization at Liangzhu are Merveille and Yasmina, who are from Africa with an ancient civilization and a long history as well. They visited the Archaeological Ruins of Liangzhu City, where they saw the wonders of the developed rice cultivation, highly skilled handicrafts, and massive water conservancy system. They were deeply impressed by the Eastern civilization represented by Liangzhu City. Merveille found that the ancient site of Liangzhu City had the world’s earliest water conservancy project more than 5,000 years ago, even earlier than that of the ancient Egypt. Yasmina realized that, more than 5,000 years ago, the ancestors of Liangzhu already knew how to use the calendar and how the climate changed throughout the year, thus they were able to make good harvests of rice. First-hand experience at Liangzhu was a good opportunity for them to learn more about this ancient culture, and gave them a unique cultural impression.
Episode 4 (22:33) - The Traces of Culture at Shangshan
The Traces of Culture at Shangshan: Three foreigners from three Continents came to Pujiang County of Zhejiang Province to get a look at the “origin of rice in the world”, and experience “Shangshan Culture”. The program tells the story of three foreigners from three Continents who came to Pujiang County of Zhejiang Province to get a look at the “origin of rice in the world”. Tim, who has been married to a Pujiang girl for 10+ years, has already been used to the local folk customs. Rice, the locally cultivated crop, has become his staple food. He came to Shangshan Archaeological Site Park to learn about the history of rice cultivation by the Shangshan ancestors ten thousand years ago. He also got to understand how "Shangshan Ruins", the remains of "the first village in ancient China" , were discovered. Taking the Luoyang shovel, which was used to excavate the cultural relics of 10,000 years ago, using the large basin, and experiencing the "stone cooking method" by the ancient people, he explored the long history of this place. Eliel, from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), also likes to eat rice and takes it as the main food. He was very interested in exploring the secrets of the "rice origin of the world". He admired the painted pottery, which was made by the Shangshan ancestors some 9,000 years ago. Nicolas, a wine merchant from France, came here to explore the ancient wine culture at Shangshan. He wanted to learn about the recipe and the social function of wine more than 9,000 years ago. Together, the three foreigners demonstrated how they understood the “Shangshan Culture”.
