Jukebox - Im Gespräch - Jordan Mechner

Der Autor und Game-Designer Jordan Mechner berichtet in einem Studiogespräch mit dem Jetzt.at-Journalisten Ingo Hasewend über sein neu erschienenes Graphic Novel „Replay“. Er erzählt wie, seine jüdische Familie 1938 vor den Nationalsozialisten fliehen musste und wie zwei von Hitler gemalte Aquarelle dabei halfen, Visa zu erhalten – ein paradoxer Moment, in dem Kunst zum Rettungsanker wurde. Mechner beschreibt, wie offen in seiner Familie über Krieg, Flucht und Trauma gesprochen wurde, und wie die Memoiren seines Großvaters eine wichtige Quelle für sein Buch „Replay“ waren. Das Werk verknüpft die Geschichte seiner Vorfahren mit seiner eigenen Perspektive als Sohn und Enkel. Außerdem spricht er über die enge Verbindung zu Wien, die kulturelle Prägung durch die deutsche Sprache und die österreichische Musiktradition sowie über sein heutiges Leben in Frankreich. Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt des Gesprächs ist seine Karriere als Entwickler von „Prince of Persia“: Das erste Spiel entstand als Familienprojekt, spätere Versionen wurden mit großen Teams realisiert. Mechner erklärt, wie sich seine Beziehung zu der Marke im Laufe der Jahrzehnte verändert hat – vom sehr persönlichen Projekt hin zu einer gewissen Distanz – bleibt aber stolz auf die Entwicklung.
